Nutter supports Ayers amid union backlash over firefighter deaths

Mayor Michael Nutter said today he won’t get in the middle of the tension between Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers and firefighters union Local 22.

But he did show support for Ayers as the union calls for the fire chief’s resignation.
KYW reports Nutter called Ayers a “dedicated public servant,” despite accusations by Local 22 yesterday that Ayers is partially responsible for the deaths of firefighters Robert Neary and Daniel Sweeney in a Kensington warehouse fire last month.

Philadelphia Director of Public Safety Michael Resnick yesterday called the union’s allegations irresponsible.

The fire is still being investigated.
