N.J. lawmaker: Give aid to students in U.S. illegally
The speaker of New Jersey’s Assembly is introducing a bill that would make college students in the U.S. illegally eligible for state tuition aid.
Speaker Vincent Prieto says the measure does not call for additional funding for financial aid.
Such students became eligible last year for in-state tuition at public colleges but many say that they cannot afford to go without more financial help.
Gov. Chris Christie vetoed the financial assistance portion of last year’s law to give students in-state tuition.
The Democrat-controlled Legislature included the aid in the budget bill it adopted last week. But Christie used his line-item veto to delete the provision.
