Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Rep. Frank Pallone to join N.J. Senate race

    Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Rep. Frank Pallone are entering the race to finish the late Frank Lautenberg’s term in the U.S. Senate.

    Booker has kickoff events planned Saturday in Newark and Willingboro.

    The Democrats are joined by Rep. Rush Holt, who was the first to say he was in the race. Former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan is running as a Republican.

    Lautenberg died Monday. Gov. Chris Christie has appointed state Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa to fill the Senate seat until the special election he called for takes place in October.

    Primaries for the seat are to be held in August.

    The deadline to file campaign papers is Monday.
