New sheriff in town

Pa. Gov. Ed Rendell has nominated a successor to Philadelphia Sheriff John D. Green. Chief Deputy Sheriff Barbara Deeley has been chosen to assume the role until a new sheriff is elected to the office a year from now.

As Heard in the Hall reports, Green had plans to retire at the end of October, but decided to stay on indefinitely — just as City Controller Alan Butkovitz issued an audit of the sheriff’s office.

Pending Senate approval, Deeley will be the first femal sheriff in the city.
