New bike lane

Next month the South Street Bridge will open ahead of schedule. Good news for a structure that not long ago was falling piece b piece into the Schuylkill.

It also might be good news for bikers who want to travel between Center City and West Philadelphia – Mayor Michael Nutter is considering installing bike lanes on Lombard and South Streets.

“Cyclists are going to be able to use lanes that go across the bridge,” said spokesman Andrew Stober. “So we need to make sure that they have bike lanes to get to the bridge.”

Narrow cart ways or not, Sober says if the city doesn’t build the new lanes, bikers will be a dangerous source of traffic.
