National Olympic Day

National Olympic Day commemorates the birth of the modern Olympic Games in 1896.

And to celebrate, Governor Jack Markell will meet with youth athletes at Leg Hall in Dover this afternoon.

The Delaware Sport Commission, in conjunction with the United States Olympic Committee, the International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Program (ICECP), and the University of Delaware are working together to host the celebration this year.

National Olympic Day is celebrated in more than 60 countries and across the United States as part of an international effort to promote the ideals of the Olympic movement, including Fair Play, Perseverance, Respect and Sportsmanship, as well as the physical benefits of sport participation.
