NJ lawmaker: States can offer instate online bets

    Yes we can!

It’s not an Obama campaign slogan, but a declaration from a New Jersey state senator who claims that individual states can legally offer Internet gambling within their own borders.

THe AP reports that Sen. Ray Lesniak of Union County wrote last week to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder asserting that New Jersey has the right to offer online betting.

Lesniak says he was responding to a letter from U.S. Sens. Harry Reid of Nevada and Jon Kyl of Arizona. They took the opposite view and asked for a federal crackdown on efforts by a dozen states to offer instate Internet gambling.

Lesniak says he’ll introduce legislation in November to address concerns cited by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie earlier this year when he vetoed a bill to legalize it.
