Toll hike on the Pa. Turnpike for those without an E-Z Pass
The Turnpike Commission is hiking tolls by 10 percent for drivers who go through the cash line. That means rates will go from a dollar and ten cents to a dollar-twenty-five. Motorists using an E-Z Pass won’t see increases at all.
Why no increase for those who pay electronically?
Bill Capone, with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, said the goal is to give people an incentive to sign on to E-Z Pass. He said they’re cheaper to manage than cash tolls, and they cut down on toll traffic. “It’s a more convenient way for people to pay without having to get a ticket once they enter, and surrender a ticket and find, you know, pay with cash or currency or coin when they exit,” said Capone.
Capone said about 65 percent of the Turnpike’s customers have E-Z Passes. A 2007 law, known as Act 44, requires the Turnpike to help fund PennDOT. So the Commission has been increasing tolls annually since 2009.
