School District of Philadelphia announces 141 layoffs today

Several Philly school secretaries, nurses, and other employees are getting something they didn’t ask for this holiday season: Unemployment.

The School District of Philadelphia is sending out layoff notices to 141 employees today, reports WHYY’s media partner the Public School Notebook.

According to the article, that number includes 47 nurses, 28 secretaries, 20 supportive services assistants, 18 non-teaching assistants, 13 school operations officers, 5 library assistants, and a handful of other support personnel.

It’s all due to incredible budget shortfalls.
