Latest Wilmington murder puts homicide rate close to 2010 record

Wilmington is closing in on a record number of homicides for 2011. The record was set in 2010

The latest murder comes just after 3pm Monday. Police responded to a report of shots being fired in the 100 block of South Jackson Ave. It took place at A Head of the Game Barber Shop. When police arrived on the scene they found a man, believed to be in his 30’s, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced dead on the scene by New Castle County paramedics.

Update: The victim was identified Wednesday as 45 year old Kenneth Jackson of Middletown.

Unofficially, this puts the yearly homicide total at 24. Last year the number topped 27. These latest murders come after a state sponsored gun buy back program. The state put up money to buy back guns in the hopes of reducing the number of shootings in Wilmington.
