Is hard work enough to get ahead?

Americans once believed that a nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic would serve to improve one’s economic lot in life. Do they still? We learn more with Frank Newport, editor in chief at the Gallup Poll.

Polls show that conservatives believe poor people can get ahead with hard work but Americans don’t want to work that hard — whereas liberals say people want to work hard but they don’t think it will necessarily get them ahead in life.

Also, we get the latest on the groups among whom President Barack Obama is drawing his strongest support. And we take a look at the number of Americans today who believe in creationism, the idea that humans were created by God, exactly as we are, 10,000 years ago.
