From the archive — The March on Washington
This drawing was originally published in 1993 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the March on Washington.
On the day I did this drawing, Michael Pakenham, editorial page editor at the time, and I decided to look up the Philadelphia Inquirer‘s coverage of the March in 1963. What we discovered was appalling: not one mention of Martin Luther King, Jr., or his speech, and the whole event was covered as a strange invasion of the capital by a large group of very strange people.
Sometimes it takes a little while to notice that history is happening around us. Thirty years from now, what will we look back on to see how wrong we were?
