First waves, now wind: Seaside Heights cancels fireworks tonight

For the second day, Seaside Heights has canceled its scheduled fireworks display.

According to the Seaside Heights Business Improvement District, tonight’s display has been canceled due to “existing and forecast winds exceeding regulatory limitations.”

It was rescheduled after a wave ran so far up the shore last night that it soaked all the fireworks set up on the beach.

Officials say the fireworks were set up closer to the surf than usual this year in an effort to satisfy state regulations requiring spectators be kept a specific distance away from the fireworks.

They say beach erosion caused by Superstorm Sandy has made fulfilling this requirement a challenge in recent years.

Some residents and others took to social media to complain about last night’s cancellation.

“Every fireworks event after Sandy has been a challenge because of the consequences of beach erosion,” Vaz said. “Seaside Heights deeply regrets the inconvenience and disappointment.”

Last summer, fireworks displays were canceled on numerous occasions due to windy conditions.
