Essayist describes anxiety after armed robber hits close to home

He recently moved to Philly, lives in what many consider a safe neighborhood and says he tries to be aware of his surroundings.

But it’s hard to keep your cool when a guy with a gun is standing in your front door.
In an essay posted to Metropolis, Fairmount resident Brendan Schaller recalls an attempted armed robbery at the door to his apartment just a few weeks after moving in.

“I have a new anxiety every time I walk outside at night, because this didn’t happen on some street somewhere in the city that I can avoid. It happened where I live, right outside my front door.”

The essay is worth reading, regardless of whether Schaller’s experience is one you’ve had.
