N.J. Gov. Chris Christie has fired seven county school superintendents from Burlington, Cape May, Hunterdon, Ocean, Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset. The decision came over the holidays, and was reportedly surprising to the seven administrators whose three-year contracts had expired.

The seven would have gone back to work yesterday, had they not received the six-sentence termination email from Gregg Edwards, the commissioner’s action chief of staff.

The termination is effective immediately, NJ Spotlight reports, and Christie is expected to fill the positions with his own nominations, pending Senate approval.
