More than 12 charged in Philly dogfighting raid

Update: WHYY’s Lizz Fiedler tells us the PSPCA is currently staging another dogfighting bust in Kensington. Authorities are at Potter and Kensington removing animals. The PSPCA is now calling on people to adopt, as the Erie Avenue shelter must now make room for the nearly 20 dogs removed from dogfighting rings since last night.

Animal welfare officials say more than a dozen people have been arrested following a late-night raid on an alleged dogfighting operation.

Police and the Pennsylvania SPCA raided a home in the city’s Grey’s Ferry neighborhood around midnight Monday. At least 15 people were arrested.

SPCA director of law enforcement George Bengal says dogs were engaging in a fight in a front bedroom when authorities arrived. He says seven dogs were taken from the property.
