Delaware soccer ref attacked

A 42-year-old Newark man is accused of abusing a sports official after the ref called a penalty against his son’s team.

Delaware State Police say Marcos Jimenez ran onto the field and attacked the 33-year-old referee, hitting him several times in the face.  It happened during a soccer game Sunday afternoon at Delcastle Recreational Park near Newark.

Police say while the referee was being attacked, his teenage daughter tried to stop the violence.  Police say Jimenez pushed the girl away.

Jimenez was later arrested at his home in Sparrow Run.  He’s charged with abuse of a sports official, harassment, conspiracy, and offensive touching.
