Delaware AG Beau Biden transfered to Philadelphia hospital after suffering “mild stroke”

    Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden heads to Thomas Jefferson hospital for treatment after doctors at Christiana hospital in Delaware diagnose his condition as a mild stoke.

    Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden is being treated at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital after being diagnosed with suffering a mild stroke.  Doctor’s at Christiana Hospital in Newark make the diagnosis on  Biden earlier in the day.

    “Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden was admitted this morning to Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware after having what we believe to be a mild stroke,”  Dr. Timothy Gardner, Medical Director of the Center for Heart and Vascular Surgery at Christiana Care Health System, said.

    “He is in good spirits and talking with his family at the hospital.  He is fully alert, in stable condition and has full motor and speech skills.  We expect him to make a complete recovery,” Gardner said.

    The Vice Presidents office reported that Beau Biden’s wife and parents, Vice President Joe Biden and Jill Biden, have been with him at the hospital.  The latest update from the White House says he will undergo further test and obervation.  He is in stable condition.  The White House statement says he has full motor and speech skills.  

    41-year-old Beau Biden was elected as Delaware’s Attorney General in 2006.  He also served in Iraq with the Delaware Army National Guard 261st Signal Brigade during the term for a year, returning in October 2009.

    Beau Biden had also considered running for the Senate seat held by his father before becoming Vice President, but decided against it.  He’s up for re-election as Delaware’s Attorney General in November 2010.

    Biden’s public schedule put him at a University of Delaware speaking engagement this evening.

    The University released this statement:  “Attorney General Beau Biden was scheduled to speak on the UD campus tonight about his lifetime in public service at an event hosted by Phi Alpha Delta and the College Democrats. Due to unfortunate circumstances, he will not be coming to campus.”

    Delaware Congressman Mike Castle issued a statement saying the Congressman and his wife Jane were glad to hear Biden is doing well and “hopes he will enjoy a prompt recovery”.  Castle suffered a series of mild strokes several years ago.

    Vice President Biden had surgery to correct a brain aneurysm while Senator from Delaware in 1988.  He was 45 years old at the time.
