Del. volunteers needed for beach grass planting
Delaware natural resources officials say more volunteers are needed to plant beach grass this weekend.
The volunteers are needed at South Bethany Beach and Delaware Seashore State Park for Delaware’s annual beach grass planting on Saturday.The event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon.
Event coordinator Jennifer Luoma says dunes in the two areas were rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy and beach grass is needed to help stabilize them. State officials say sand dunes are essential for protection against damaging coastal storms, replenishing sand to eroded beaches.
The planting program is now in its 24th year. State officials say about 800 turned out last year and planted more than 150,000 stems of beach grass along four miles of coastline.
