Wind farm off Del. moves closer to reality

A proposed wind farm off the Delaware coast is getting closer to reality.

NRG Bluewater has the first contract in the nation for offshore wind power, signed in 2008 with Delmarva Power. The Department of the Interior announced Monday it would open a 30-day public comment period on the environmental and socioeconomics impacts of offshore renewable-energy projects off the coast of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia.

If the department determines there is no significant impact on Delaware, NRG Bluewater could sign a lease for a tract of land off the southern Delaware shore and then move forward with more detailed environmental reviews.
