Cross-country bike ride through 12 states ends in New Jersey

A 12 state, 3,000 mile cross country bike ride came to an end in New Jersey Saturday for two bicyclists in front of Newark City Hall.

According to The Star-Ledger, 62-year-old Joe Batista began his trip on July 17 alongside biking partner John Sowell, 44.

The pair set off on their journey to raise money for causes close to them, according to the report.

Batista’s wife, Rosalie, followed the two closely by car during their trip, helping them to navigate dark roads and, at times, inclement weather.

The Star-Ledger reports the biking pair averaged around 105 miles each day, taking on 115 degree heat in California and Arizona and high winds through Kansas.

On Saturday, Sowell told The Star-Ledger “today is the best day of my life.”
