On the east bank of the Schuylkill River just northwest of Center City, scores of rowers prepared for the 76th Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on Friday morning.

The two-day event draws crews from all across the country. This year nearly 120 teams from universities, colleges, and varied associations registered to compete in more than 175 races.

In 2013 there were 128 schools to enter the regatta, making the Aberdeen Dad Vail the largest college regatta in North America.

With the exception of the years during World War II, the Dad Vail has been held continuously since 1934 and has been a fixture in Philadelphia since 1953.
