Cherry blossom festivities spring up around the city

Though the 2012 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival officially kicks-off in LOVE Park at 15th and JFK on Monday, March 26, at noon, this weekend marks the unofficial opening of the 15th annual festival, with events that celebrate the cultural, social and educational customs of the Japanese.

Events began on Friday with the Blossom Bash, held at the Hyatt, and continue on Sunday with an afternoon of Kabuki Dance at the Kimmel Center, the first performance of its kind in Philadelphia.

The Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia features a series of traditional spring events. Over the past decade, the organization has donated over 1,000 cherry blossom trees that act as the backdrop for more than 50 events during the weeks-long celebration, which culminates on April 15, during Sakura Sunday in Fairmount Park.
