School fire

A West Philadelphia charter school damaged by a five-alarm fire is telling students not to report for classes this week.

Fire crews were called to the Global Leadership Academy in the Parkside section of the city just before 6 a.m. yesterday after a passing police officer spotted the blaze. Arriving crews saw flames shooting from the basement, and the response had reached five alarms an hour later.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

An update on the school’s website says the school “cannot be salvaged” and students at that campus should not report to classes before Jan. 18. The School District of Philadelphia says it has offered the use of the former W.S. Peirce School as a temporary location.
