Bucks County woman finalist for Catholic Charities volunteer of the year award

    The 89-year-old founder of Mary’s Cupboard, a food pantry in Levittown, Bucks County, is a finalist for a national award.  Marion Slack is one of ten being honored by Catholic Charities as 2011 Volunteers of the Year.

    Slack says growing up in Scranton during the Depression, she saw lots of hungry people looking for food at the monastery across the street from her home.She and her husband, Don, moved to Levittown because he couldn’t find work in Scranton.

    He now is in a nursing home, but Slack says she could not have started the food pantry without him.Slack says she is surprised and honored by the award.
