Temple proposes new Boathouse Row facility

Temple University wants to build a new rowing facility on Philadelphia’s historic Boathouse Row.

The school is seeking permission to build at 23,000-square-foot boathouse and dock on the Schuylkill River that would be home to its roughly 100 rowers.

Temple and other groups had used the city-owned East Park Canoe House but inspectors shuttered the building in 2008 over structural concerns. The university has been setting up tents for shelter since the canoe house was closed.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Temple’s proposal would contribute $1.5 million toward restoration of its former home. The city has estimated it would cost up to $5 million to repair the canoe house.

The parks department has scheduled a Jan. 16 hearing on the proposal.
