Bear spotted on Philly-Montco border

Officials are investigating numerous reports of a bear sighting on the border of Abington Township and Philadelphia.

Officials say several witnesses spotted the animal on Pine Road and Shady Lane on Tuesday. One witness was Foose Tahiraj, the owner of a Philadelphia deli.

Tahiraj says he was delivering two hoagie trays at the intersection of Pine Road and Shady Lane around 3:30 p.m. when he spotted the bear in a wooded area about 75 yards away.

“I just took the photo to show my boys that I ran into a bear today,” Tahiraj said. “It looked cute. It looked nice. It didn’t look mean.”

Officials say the animal is a male black bear, weighing approximately 150 pounds. They also say the same bear was spotted several times in Bucks County over the last few days.

Conservation officers as well as the Philadelphia, Rockledge and Abington police departments are all searching for the animal.

“We will have increased patrol in the area to keep the residents at ease,” said Rockledge Police Detective Luke Lukashunas.

Officers say they set a trap where the bear was last spotted.
