Bad for business

It’s like a dream come true: gamble all your money, eat and drink, smoke indoors and then get a free ride home. SugarHouse casino’s Sugar Express shuttle service has pick-up locations throughout the city to make gambling all the more convenient. But business owners near the bus route worry they’ll take a hit.

Conversation’s a-brewin’ over on PhillySpeaks, where South Philly business owners are concerned the casino is targeting their customers. The Sugar Express stops at several neighborhood intersections, including Seventh and South, where PS member “loveisnoise” works.

The fear is bar and restaurant customers from the neighborhood who’d normally plant themselves in a local joint will now hop the free ride to SugarHouse instead, where they drink and gamble. Neighbors cite some heavy marketing for the shuttle service, and think the city needs to reign the casino in.
