Back to School night canceled in Haddonfield School District
Sunday, Haddonfield School Superintendent Richard Perry canceled Back to School nights across the district, after receiving a telephone message from Haddonfield Education Association Co-president Sharon Stokes, saying that the teachers would not attend, according to Haddonfield Patch.
In a phone interview, Stokes said the teachers’ action was due to their contract. Teachers have been working under an expired contract since June 2010. The teachers received no pay raise but they experienced increased health-care costs, according to Stokes. Information on a newer contract has not been released.
Parents were outraged upon hearing the news. Some of them believed this cancellation of events would make the teachers look bad. Others were in shock because they have never missed a Back to School night before.
Monday morning, teachers would not reconsider their decision. However this will not affect after-school extra-curricular activities.
