Authorities recover body from water near Sandy Hook

    Authorities recovered a body floating in a tidal waterway this morning near Sandy Hook.

    New Jersey State Police troopers with the Marine Services Bureau said the body was found near the Route 36 bridge that connects Sea Bright and Highlands. 

    Police have not yet identified the body.

    The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and the Bradley Beach Police Department also responded to the scene

    A 31-year-old man from Newark who disappeared in the ocean off Bradley Beach around 7 p.m. Saturday remains missing. 

    A multi-agency water search that covered 248-square miles was suspended Sunday evening.

    The U.S. Coast Guard deployed 87-foot cutters Bonito and Crocodile, helicopters from Air Station Atlantic City, and boat crews from Station Shark River and Manasquan Inlet.

    “Our hearts go out to the friends, families, and loved ones who are impacted by this tragic event” said Coast Guard Capt. Scott Anderson, Deputy Sector Commander, Sector Delaware Bay. “Coast Guard crews and our partner agencies worked together to search for this individual and it’s never an easy decision to stop searching.”
