Amusement park to reopen one day after ferris wheel death

The Press of Atlantic City reports that Morey’s Piers is reopening at 12:30 p.m. today, almost exactly one day after a middle school-aged girl fell from ferris wheel and died.

All three of Morey’s Piers closed at 5 p.m. yesterday following the death of Abiah Jones, 11, who was on a trip with classmates from PleasanTech Academy Charter School.

Police reported that she fell while riding the 156-foot Giant Wheel at Mariner’s Landing Pier, operated by Morey’s Piers. Gawker reports an eyewitness saying that Jones fell when she fainted after “peeking over the railing.”

The Giant Wheel, which passed a safety inspection in March, will remain closed indefinitely.
