Under investigation, Philadelphia sheriff asks for more money

Philadelphia’s Acting Sheriff is asking for some more staff. Even while her office is the subject of internal and external audits along with a federal grand jury investigation, acting Philadelphia Sheriff Barbara Deeley told City Council she is doing her best to sort through everything.   Deeley said the office needs $2.8 million more to hire new staff.

“Our ability to protect courtrooms across Philadelphia is directly related to the number of deputy sheriffs we can assign to these courtrooms,” said Deeley.   “At present we are dangerously approaching dangerously low levels of sheriff staffing in our courtrooms.”

Deeley said she needs 32 new deputies to do the job properly. The office is also requesting a million dollars this year to pay for overtime.

City Council did not accept or reject the request.
