New company promises familiar Tastykakes

The making of Tastykakes, Philadelphia’s iconic snack food, is officially in the hands of its new owner: Flowers Foods.

Allen Shiver, Flowers Foods president, said Philadelphians don’t have to worry about the Thomasville, Georgia, company messing with their Krimpets.

“One of the appeals of Tastykakes is the unique items and the formulations that are very distinctive and different. Our plans are not to change any of the formulations on Tastykake,” said Shiver. “The existing product line is going to stay the same and we are looking to expand that product line into other areas.”

Shiver said the company expects to distribute Tastykakes into other parts of the country, and also use the state-of-the art bakery at the Philadelphia Navy Yard to make bread to sell here.

“We’re excited about adding our Nature’s Own brand of bread onto some of the Tasty routes in the Philadelphia area. In other situations, we will be adding additional dedicated bread routes.”

Shiver said the deal should keep workers at Tasty’s two bakeries busier than ever.
