Deloitte chosen to audit Philadelphia Sheriff’s office

Philadelphia’s City Controller has officially hired an outside accounting firm to do a forensic audit of the Sheriff’s Department.

The forensic audit was called for by Controller Alan Butkovitz after his preliminary review found major problems.  The bookkeeping was a mess and Butkovitz says it requires a sophisticated audit and investigation.

He has selected Deloitte Financial Advisory Services.  “I think we are trying to figure out exactly what was done wrong over there and implicit in that would be a plan to assure that this doesn’t happen again,” said Butkovitz.

Butkovitz adds the accounting firm brings experienced auditors including former law enforcement officials.

“It’s a team that is going to be headed by Louis Pichini who is the former longtime chief of the criminal division of the US Attorneys office in Philadelphia,” he said.

The Sheriff’s office says it is cooperating fully with the review.
