The Elephant Man, The Johnny Cash Experience and more happening in Delaware this week

From concerts and movies, to special events for the whole family, there is always something to see and do in Delaware. Here are some of our picks:   

New Castle County

The Elephant Man, March 17th – 19th

The moving tale of John Merrick, a passionate, artistic soul trapped in a body hideously disfigured by a horrifying rare disease. Named the “Elephant Man” in a touring freak show, he is rescued by a renowned surgeon and becomes the unlikely toast of London society. A poignant look at disability, intolerance, and the gift of kindness, this Tony award winning play retains its power to shake us to our depths. This production runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. The production contains theatrical haze and brief nudity. University of Delaware, Thompson Theatre at Roselle Center for the Arts, Newark.

 

Market Street Music Thursday Noontime Concert: Piffaro, The Renaissance Band, March 23rd

This well-loved Philly-based early music ensemble makes a quick stop to play for Thursday Noontime Concert audiences. This ensemble is known for its polished recreations of wind band music from the Renaissance. Free admission (donations gratefully accepted). First and Central Presbyterian Church, Wilmington.

 

Kent County

Classical Piano Series, Part 1, March 19th

Enjoy a Sunday afternoon of classical piano music in a beautiful setting. University of Delaware piano student, Christin Cooper, will perform in Part 1 of our Spring Classical Piano Series. Attendees will receive a complimentary drink ticket, which they can exchange for wine, water, or soda. Concert begins at 2:00pm. Doors will open at 1:15pm. Tickets are $16 general admission, $14 for SOH members, senior citizens, and military, and $8 for children under 12. Smyrna Opera House.

 

Listen Up! Workshops: Delaware History through Spoken Word, March 18th – 25th

Spoken word poets and musicians will lead two workshops on the art of Spoken Word for students ages 12-21 at the Old State House in Dover. Through these FREE workshops, students ages 12 to 21, will learn intriguing facts about Delaware’s history; how to write and create their own spoken word art; and how to add music, dance and theater to their presentations. Workshop participants are invited to perform their original spoken word piece before a live audience during National Poetry Month on April 8 at 1 p.m. at the Old State House. The Old State House, Dover.

The Johnny Cash Experience, March 24th

David Stone: The Johnny Cash Experience takes the audience through the late country legend’s career, covering Early Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash & June Carter, and the Folsom Prison Concert Era. Those who see his performance will know what it must have been like to see the real Johnny Cash in concert — his voice, mannerisms, and his band are wholly true to the legend. This is the only Johnny Cash Tribute ever to be selected by the State of California (even over Johnny’s original band) to play the 40th anniversary commemorative concert at San Quentin State Prison on February 24, 2009.
