Phaithful unfazed

The Phillies are on a–gasp!–losing streak. Given fans’ sky-high expectations for the team just a few weeks ago, is it time to panic?

This sentence from the website baseballbytom.com, lays out the very high expectations fans and commentators set for this Phillies team: “The injury bug has already hit Philadelphia, but can anything stop the Phillies in 2011?”

Sporting a Phillies hat in Center City, Albert Trimble said he’s disappointed by the losses and the offensive struggles, but he’s not ready to throw in the towel. The lifelong Phillies fan, has seen years of World Series drought–and he’s staying calm.

“They going to be all right, they going to be all right, they’ll come around,” he said.

Sportswriter Jim Salisbury agrees that there’s no reason to panic.

“They’ve lost three in a row and they still have the best record in the National League. As I speak with you, I’m in St. Louis and the Cardinals won the World Series in 2006 and I believe they had two eight-game losing streaks that year,” Salisbury said. “So a three-game losing streak in baseball is not like it would be in football. It’s just a small piece of the season.”

Salisbury said this team has the experience to endure the peaks–and valleys–of a season.
