Philly protesters set to join 99-minute Occupy strike

A general strike is being called Wednesday by the Occupy movement–including protesters in Philadelphia.

Gwen Snyder of the Occupy Philadelphia Labor Committee said she had union support for the 99-minute general strike that is scheduled to begin at noon.

“I’m here to say labor supports this general strike,” she said.

Philadelphia AFL-CIO Council head Pat Eiding said while labor has supported the movement, it won’t be backing Wednesday’s event.

“Do we support what’s going on in this country? Absolutely,” he said. “Do we support a strike? Absolutely not.”

Told of Eiding’s comment, Snyder said, “We’re not speaking on behalf of any particular labor movement or organization. But the labor community and committee here at Philadelphia Occupy consists of representatives from many different labor unions.”
