A suspect is in custody after a shooting on Thursday afternoon near the campus of Stockton University in Galloway Township.

Investigators say the gunfire may have been the result of road rage.

The shooting happened on W. Jimmie Leeds Road near the area of Redwood Avenue around 12:52 p.m.

The victim was shot in the face and taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division in an unknown condition.

The suspect was arrested in a nearby housing development. That person’s name has not been released.

A shelter-in-place order was in effect for the campus as police spent hours searching the area. It has since been lifted.

“We were all worried, like, were they on campus? Were they going to be going into classrooms? Because we were told they were around our age, so they could blend in,” said freshman Brooke Heritage.

One student said she was in the dining hall when the shelter-in-place was called, and she went around to students wearing their headphones.

They hid in the theater for hours while the investigation was underway, sending texts to their loved ones that they were safe.

“I’m glad it’s under control, but it’s still a feeling of discomfort. Like, when I was walking to my car, I was looking around with an eerie, kind of panicked feeling I was having,” said Heritage.

Students say that despite the lockdown being over, they still feel uneasy.

“The world is just scary,” said freshman Diamond Caze. “You don’t think it’s going to happen at your college until it does, and then it’s just like, wow. This is real.”

Stockton University President Joe Bertolino put out a statement saying the shelter in place was out of an abundance of caution.

“I recognize how unsettling it can be to receive an alert like that, and I want to commend you for your patience, understanding, and commitment to following the guidance provided,” he wrote.

The university said all classes and activities are canceled for the rest of the day.
