Trump threatens to cut federal aid if schools don’t reopen

Trump's executive order aimed at dismantling the Education Department follows drastic staffing cuts. Advocates say the changes could put critical school funding at risk.

In the weeks since he took office, the Trump administration already has cut the department's staff in half and overhauled much of the department’s work.

After Tuesday’s layoffs, the Education Department’s staff will sit at roughly half of its previous 4,100, the agency said.
