Philadelphia Art Commission approves work to begin on Harriet Tubman statue

The project, with a budget of $500,000, will be the first statue of an African American historic female figure in the city’s public art collection.

The newly commissioned permanent statue will be larger than the temporary Tubman statue currently at City Hall.

The nine-foot-tall sculpture will reside on the apron of City Hall until the end of March when the city will celebrate the anniversary of her birth in March of 1822.
