Federal prosecutors have announced charges against two Philadelphia prison guards in an alleged beating of an inmate last fall.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Wednesday that 35-year-old Robert Berger and 47-year-old Nathaniel Morris are charged with violating the constitutional rights of an inmate at the Curran-Freehold Correctional Facility. They were also charged with making false statements relating to the incident.

Prosecutors said the defendants are accused in an indictment of having repeatedly punched and kicked the inmate Sept. 10 although the victim “was compliant and not posing a physical threat to anyone.”

A union representing correctional officers declined comment Wednesday.
