Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney is reinforcing his desire to keep Philadelphia a sanctuary city.Kenney says Philadelphia has driven down crime since it became a sanctuary city, where officials won’t report people whose immigration status is in question, or hand over people who’ve been arrested to immigration officials without a warrant.
“We will continue to uphold the things that we believe in the policies and beliefs that we hold as a city will be upheld,” he said. “We will try to protect ourselves whatever we can but I’m not going to turn my back on people who decided they wanted to live in Philadelphia.”
Kenney says if Philadelphia gave up sanctuary city status, immigrants here illegally would not come forward to report crimes, or act as witnesses.
Donald Trump has promised to crack down on sanctuary cities, Kenney says he’s taking a “wait an see” attitude.
