Higdon: Summer Shimmers

This is a tone-poem depicting the sounds and impressions of summer in Tennessee, where Jennifer Higdon spent summers as a teenager. Ms. Higdon is a Curtis graduate and currently teaches composition at the school.
Barber: Summer Music

The connection between these first two works is unmistakable and intentional. Of course, Samuel Barber was one of the Curtis Institute’s first graduates, and wrote this piece for the Detroit Chamber Music Society in 1953. it has gone on to be one of the most popular chamber works of the 20th century.
Gideon Whitehead, guitar
David Starobin is co-head (along with Jason Vieaux) of the Curtis Institute’s Guitar Program. Paul Lansky wrote this work for Starobin, who has championed his music. The playful titles of the sections we hear tonight include: Putative Prelude; Partly Pavane and Awkward Allemande.
Bartok: String Quartet No.4
Brandon Garbot & Stephen Waarts, violins; Hyeri Shin, viola; Rainer Eudeikis, cello
Dating from 1927, this quartet employs the “arch” style of construction, with the first and last movements related thematically, as well as the second and fourth. The third movement stands alone. The movements are marked: Allegro; Prestissimo, con sordino; Non troppo lento; Allegretto pizzicato and Allegro molto.
