A worker at the Beachwood Plaza shopping center demolition site on Route 9 in Berkeley was killed this afternoon when a portion of a building collapsed, police said.

Emergency personnel responded to the property around 1:15 p.m. on a report of a partial building collapse and a construction worker possibly entrapped, according to a release from the Berkeley Township Police Department.

“Rescue crews dug through the debris and located the victim under the collapsed roof. MONOC paramedics later pronounced the victim dead,” the release said.

The Berkeley Township Police Department, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
