Vandals smash ice sculptures in State College

The First Night celebration in one central Pennsylvania town is spawning an unwelcome tradition: Vandals smashing ice sculptures made to celebrate the event.

State College police tell the Centre Daily Times they’re not sure how many of the sculptures were smashed overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

Local artists created the sculptures from 300-pound blocks of ice on Wednesday evening. When some visitors went to view them Thursday morning, several were found to be smashed.

Police Lt. Mark Argiro says police aren’t formally investigating because no one has officially called them to report the damage, which the lieutenant says happens every year in the town which is home to Penn State University.
