South Jersey police officer guilty of shooting friend to death

A New Jersey policeman accused of shooting his friend to death has been found guilty of murder.Deptford officer James Stuart was convicted of murder and aggravated manslaughter Thursday. Prosecutors say Stuart shot David Compton in the face at Stuart’s home while he was off duty.

Stuart testified Compton went to his home in January 2013 after they were at a bar. Compton asked to look at his off-duty weapon while they were watching a movie, Stuart said.

Prosecutors argued Stuart acted recklessly, but Stuart said he didn’t know the gun was loaded and he would never have hurt Compton.

Mutual friends testified the men were close friends.
