Sounds of attempted silence mark 9/11 anniversary

A call for silence may as well be a call for noise. Birds chirping, throats clearing, pins dropping — there’s plenty to hear when no one is talking.

That’s all part of the audio exhibit at Temple’s Tyler School of Art. The five-month series studies and displays quiet, beginning with moments of silence recorded during 9/11 commemorative events.

WHYY/NewsWorks’ Peter Crimmins has some samples for us from the exhibit, some of which are quite loud.

Tyler’s program will feature various sounds and sights of silence and their significance.
