Sign will again welcome drivers to Atlantic City
Visitors will once again be welcomed to Atlantic City.
Atlantic City Expressway crews on Friday began re-installing a highway welcome sign they had removed this week because it did not have the proper permit.
The Press of Atlantic City reports Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox told the South Jersey Transportation Authority Thursday to put the sign back up in time for Memorial Day weekend. He says his department will work on issuing a new permit.
NJDOT agency spokesman Steve Schapiro says that because of the sign’s “iconic nature” the SJTA can still erect the sign while working to get a permit.
The landmark sign has long hung on an overpass above the Atlantic City Expressway on the outskirts of the city. The sign took on several iterations throughout its existence, reflecting the city’s evolving tourism campaigns.
