Several inmates stage food protest at N.J. prison

Several inmates at New Jersey’s Bayside State Prison are skipping a meal in an apparent protest of food served by a new vendor at the facility in Cumberland County.

The Corrections Department says the 2,200 inmates are not staging a hunger strike.

Department spokesman Matt Schuman tells The Press of Atlantic Citysome inmates won’t eat breakfast, but they’ll eat lunch and dinner. Schuman says there are no inmates who refuse to eat.

 

Aramark Correctional Services took over food production at Bayside in February as part of a state pilot program.

Schuman says the department is talking with inmate representatives and Aramark officials in hopes of resolving the problem.
