Scenes from the shore – Traditions prevail, despite the work in progress

Sandy may have done her worst, but the unofficial start of summer must go on – and it did this Memorial Day holiday of 2013.

In Lavallette the boardwalk was reopened in time for this weekend’s festivities. Though reminders of the harsh winter persist as the homes along the shoreline, which almost all used to have elaborate set-ups of decks, furniture and plantings were left unadorned on a windy Saturday in May.

The crowds along the boardwalk in Seaside Heights were bolstered slightly, as the area doubled as both an amusement park and construction site.

But the thin numbers and cool overcast weather wasn’t all bad as empty beaches play host to anglers and sportsmen of all ages.
